sorry to hijack this thread, but i’m also facing the same and will be needing to record beth in earnest at home.

after reading the suggestions, i’m thinking it’s far to say that the MXL 990 is emerging as a bit of winner, right?

however, i’m on a serious budget here now, the problem is that i don’t have a pre-amp (cost, anyone?) and my mixer at home (crappy behringer mini one) doesn’t have phantom power. any thoughts?

also, this deal -

MXL 990/991 Recording Mic Duo and M-Audio Audio Buddy on eBay, also Wired Microphones, Microphones, Pro Audio, Musical Instruments (end time 11-Jun-08 19:17:27 BST)

does that seem reasonable to you? i’m not sure why the other mic is necessary, and is the pre-amp likely to be shit?

H

ok, so i just realised the audio-buddy pre-amp has phatom power, so i’m the stupid one here.

however, advice if you please anyone:

1. the chap selling it is asking for $70 just for the postage, handling & insurance on the item, bringing it to $170 overall, does that sound a tad odd to you?

2. will there be a power conversion issue with this in transferring to the UK?

3. anyone know about customs charges for this sort of thing?

H
