Impulse comparison....

So I got bored today and took a whack at trying out impulses. I recorded two tracks of the exact same riff. One with impulses and one without. There is pretty huge difference in the two but I cant quite decide if I like either one. They both seem a bit thin, but I can say I do like the one with the impluses the best. I didnt do any editing and the playing is pretty sloppy sorry about that.

I used the big bottom patch on my POD X3 with guitarhacks edgesneap impulse.

For one I don't really understrand impulses or know what they are but I will say I like your tones quite a bit. The one with impulses is pretty brutal it doesn't sound too thin IMO. I know it was a tone test, but the drums (if louder) would make a world of difference in the overall sound of the guitars. Also EQing and compression would change the sound. Boost some mids to give it more punch or try double-tracking...I really liked the riff as well bro. Keep it up!

Yeah its weird. i have decided to ditch using impulses as its too much work to be honest. But either way haha its a cool way to hear the difference.

Impulses are basically shells of certain sounds, mainly used in convolution reverb plugs. How they work is that a signal sweep (20hz-20khz, typically) is sent through a speaker and into a room, where a mic records the sound. The recorded sound is then processed to remove that signal sweep, leaving the acoustic signature of the room.

The same thing applies with speaker impulses, except the added benefit of an amp's power section adding harmonics. The sweep signal is removed, leaving the basic tone of the amplifier's power amp, the speaker cabinet, and the room ambience. It's really a great way of doing things. You can record your amp rig with a few mics and run the preamp out of your amp head into the board and add an impulse of a cab afterwards.

Your ass here!

He just explained what impulses are.

You can find that impulse with the whole ZIP of GuitarHack's impulses, if you can't track it down IM me and I'll send it over as soon as I find it.
