Try the Dual Rectifier amp with a tube screamer in front of it. I like the TS with about 0 drive 45 gain and 0 tone on my patches in Metal Shop. Seriously though, you really have to get that upgrade. It's great.

I switch between two, depending on my mood. spinal puppet is the best head on there without the metal shop upgrade, but it depends dramatically on what cab you use with it. Tubescreamer is a must, 0 drive, bout 40 gain, and 100% tone IMO. As for cabs, green 25s will give you a really organic, shithot tube sound with lots of bite, very thrash metal, where-as the line 6 4x10 (that's right, the line6 4x10!) gives you a really fuckin ridiculously heavy modern Meshuggah/Mnemic sorta sound.

People ask me all the time if i've got the metal upgrade and the answer, quite simply, is no. I'm sure the metal pack is amazing, but i get some fuckin fabulous tones out of the xt with no upgrade. That's not to say i'm not gonna do it haha, i just can't afford it at the mo!

Nice man. I'm gonna try the line 6 cab more often.

yeah man make sure it's the 4x10, not the 4x12.

You'd think the 4x12 would give the more desired sound but it doesn't. I guess the 4x10 has the tighter bass response due to the nature of the smaller cones? Not sure, either way, it's really fuckin heavy. I'm in the process of recording a new song with my new patch so you can hear what i mean, but it's very much like the tone on the opening riff to 'Obzen', just really crushing, quite digitally, but in a nice way. love it.

I really don't get why people hate digital sounds so much. I guess there's good and bad digital sounds.

yeah man i guess people feel all this modelling business we do is cheating a producer out of a job somewhere?

i've heard some digital tones that are TERRIBLE, and i don't like losing too much organic sound, but so long as it sounds good who cares. Some of Dino Cazares' tones are as digital as fuck, but they're absolutely crushing. You just have to EQ it right so it doesn't sound overly processed. Not to mention you can achieve these sounds with non digital equipment, it's just more expensive!
