If you haven't tried impulses, I'd strongly recommend trying those instead of the POD cab sims. The POD stuff is great but I think the cab sim is the weakest link there, and impulses make everything sexy.

Hey would having another guitarist record on the other side cause enough of a tonal difference to eliminate the mono effect? I know it's only slightly noticeable to most ears but there's definitely a tonal difference one one of the other guitarists in my band is playing through my rig with my guitar and their picking sounds different.

It's a Berklee tip/trick, depending on how you look at it. Try it sometime - it's pretty slick.

That's how bands tend to be recorded, it'll be good enough.

Cool thanks! This sounds better than changing amp or pedal settings, plus someone else needs to do some work in my band

Well back on the Firepod, is there anything else some one could recommend that could offer the same flexibility and channels as the Firepod but but perhaps with better preamps or something like that? Money isn't an issue, my policy, save for something better or what you really want.

Well, if money isn't an issue, then yeah, there's a whole world of options. I mean, bigger picture, the Firepod is pretty much serious hobbyist grade - you don't see them at multi-millio dollar studios for a reason. Some sort of dedicated A/D D/A conversion box and a whole bunch of pro quality pres will smoke a Firepod, but what little pricing I've done suggests you're looking a grand or two a channel for really pro quality pres.

So, it begs the question - do you want to spend thirty or forty grand on your recording rig?

For the two guitarist thing, that certainly works and if you're having both guys play on the recording then that's how I'd do it. That said, especially when you're dealing with technical metal, sometimes the slight differences in a player's touch and technique can make a mix begin to sound sloppy, so it's also not unheard of to have guitarists trade off - one guitarist tracks all of the rhythm parts for one song, while the other does another, etc.

"...and everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon."

Well ok, how about just under a grand for eight channels? I'm not willing set up a studio that hits the price of a nice car, I just want something decent to record an album with. My policy I don't want to buy something and regret not spending a little more to get something better. There's always something better, but I posted my limit for the time being. I am serious about recordings and I've recorded a number of other people that say I do a pretty good job with what little I have. Either way a Firepod might be a big upgrade from what I use lol.

I'd say a Focusrite Saffire would be a hell of a move, and then spend the rest on a couple of mics or nice preamps...
