A Few Recording Questions...

Yeah I know I already got a thread about my song "Reunion" floating around here, but I just had a few questions I could use answering...

1) I use a POD X3 Live and I just got my Presonus Firebox in the mail today...my questions is should I record my guitar and bass tracks in mono and pan them respectively (100% L and R) and only record in stereo if I have a patch that calls for it or should I be recording in stereo...I've always recorded in stereo, but I just now thought to ask this question...I've been doing digital records for a few years now and never thought to ask

2) In your opinion, what are the best monitoring / recording headphones? I'm currently using some BOSE around ear headphones...they're great for listening to music, not so much mixing

3) To anyone that uses a POD X3 Live, have you found any good amp combos? I find Big Bottom and Chunk Chunk go well as well as Modern HiGain and Chunk Chunk (I like Chunk Chunk...it's good for a beefy low end)...

That's all I can think of right now. Any responses are appreciated ... thanks fellas (and the occasional lady that strolls through this part of town)

1: Yupp, record it in mono. This is how i do it at least: Line out (L+R) on the Pod -> Instrument input on the external soundcard. And when choosing what type of audio recordingtrack in my DAW i choose mono.

2: I have recently ordered AKG K 701 ( i think that was its name)..when i recieve it i can tell you more But i have heard those are simply incredible.

3: I still just use the Bulb patch..hehe...i just do some eqing in cubase to make it my own.

I record everything in mono - if I'm recording a stereo source (say, two mics on an acoustic), I simply record it to two mono tracks. It gives you a bit more panning flexibility, and iif your source is truely mono (a mono guitar signal, say), then you're using double the file space/RAM to record it in stereo when theres no gain to be had, which makes no sense.

I record in mono as well and I also take off any effects...just a dry signal. I add in the effects later (reverb, chorus, delay, etc.) unless it's something like wah.

Bruce Sweiden (Produced Thriller among others) records everything in stereo. Even mono sources like gutiar amps. If I understand his reasoning, it is that even a little pit of separation between the tracks can give more space and depth to the soundstage. Also, some very well respected guitarists have recorded one track in stereo - Jack E. Lee and Eddie Van Halen come to mind... so it can work both ways.

Me? I record mono sources in mono, and even if I use two mics (which I almost always do) I'll pan those to the same spot. Record everything dry, add the effects in later. If you add stereo effects, you can leave them in stereo even on a mono signal. However, try playing with a stereo spread that is not 100% Left & 100% Right. For a lead guitar that's panned 50% Right, try making the stereo spread on the effects 80% Right and 20% Right. That will give some "spread" to the effect, but will still place the lead guitar on the right of the sound stage.

For phones, I like the AKG K270s that I've had for years. Audio Technica just came out with a new set that are supposed to be amazing, but I've not heard them yet.

...that the play is the tragedy, "Man"
