The only way in which I can begin to think about it making a difference is in inconsistent gear, where left and right pass through different components (even if it's after the single mic and preamp) and this adds some extra breadth to the signal. If that's the case then it doesn't really seem worth bothering about with modern consistent recording hardware running into a computer. Or, again in the analogue side of it, I guess it could make a difference depending on how the gain staging works, getting different effects by feeding two signals rather than one louder signal. Still seems weird. |

Think of this: if you have two mics on a guitar cab there is sone stereo space between them. Maybe that little bit of spread does something to give the amp tracks more "space". He's got a lot more grammys than I do, so what do I know?

thanks everybody for the advice. I've started recording in mono and amazingly it frees up space in my mix so when a guitar is supposed to be panned hard left and right (i.e. 100% either way) they actually sound that way. I'm also recording 24-bit at 48.100 as opposed to 41.000 (i more than likely typed those out wrong) now and the quality is a hell of a lot better. recording bass in mono makes sense as well. it doesn't eat up as much space in the center spectrum either. keep giving me some headphone recommendations!
