Going to the studio with the band this morning

they recorded new stuff before i joined, and we're going to listen to a couple songs being mixed. i'm interested to hear how the new recordings turned out, and i'll be sure to ask the guy about what he used for mics on stuff. i already have an idea of what was used for drums (i saw pictures), but i'm curious what was used for guitar and how he made it sound.

anyway, have to get ready to go....i'll report back when i get home, and possibly have new tracks to post

ok, so it turns out the studio where the mixing/editing is getting done is in a dude's basement...he's actually got kind of a nice setup, with a separate control room that's fairly well acoustically isolated. the tracks were recorded in another, more "real" studio where the engineer used to work. i don't remember what all they said were used on the drums, but i do remember that they used Sennheiser MD421s for the toms, an SM57 for the snare, and i believe an Audix D6 for the kick. they're using drumagog for replacement on some songs, but others don't need it.

the guitar tracks that are getting used were done with a Sennheiser e609, and were used with the other guitarist's 6505+ and Behringer cab (remember, this is before i was in the band).

the bass was done with both a mic (don't remember what kind) and a DI.

they have a couple parts where they went with takes i would have definitely discarded (bad notes, slight out-of-tune-ness), and for whatever reason, they didn't record to a click, so the timing is a bit..."loose" at times.

we were given a couple rough mixes to bring home and listen, and we've posted them on our myspace (link in my signature). on my speakers, i found that they're really bottom heavy, with a big muddy mess in the 60-100Hz range, and that the bass is almost inaudible, so these definitely need some work. they're still a huge improvement over the previous demo tracks that were posted online, though.

sounds interesting! are you giong to talk to the sound engineer about the muddiness and lack of bass being audible?

and suprisingly, those behringer cabs dont sound half bad IMO.

3 cheers for free gear!

yeah, these are rough mixes so we can still give a good bit of input. i'm probably also going to offer to the band and engineer to re-track some of the guitars on my own time, using my own gear (basically just the rhythm parts that i play), and give the engineer the raw tracks, and see if that can help it sound better overall....plus, then i can get an album credit

so, it turns out i was wrong about the guitar tracks, and i'd just assumed that they were recent enough to be Alex's 6505+....turns out that they were actually tracked before his old amp got stolen....a Marshall Mode 4
