You should get exactly the same sounds as a PodXT, it just does all the processing using your computer rather than the actual unit (I think). Plus you get all the mic preamp models.

I've also got one the UX1 model, it's pretty damn cool. I wish i'd have brought a Pod, but only so I could use it elsewhere as well as at the PC. But for the value, they're really good. Get the metal-shop pack of amps if you can, it's well worth it.

From what I know about the unit you will have a lot of the options that you have with the Pod. This just limits you to your computer... If you have a laptop you will be set... Unlike the UX1 your TonePort UX2 has more features like analog VU meters, two microphone inputs with preamps. Both preamps have phantom power. You will also see that it has stereo digital S/PDIF out, dual footswitch jacks for controlling start/stop and punch in/out. Last but not least this has independent volume controls for the headphone and main outputs.
It's no pod, but it will get the job done. Feel Free to read the online owners manual, and our customer review on the item. Here is the link |

are the "packs" just a software download?

Yeah, the packs are software downloads but they cost money. I got my metal shop pack free in a deal with the UX1 though. They're not necessary, but I found the amps that come as standard a bit lacking, although with tweaking I expect you can get a lot of good sounds from them.
You get Gearbox as the controlling software with the Toneport, that is effectively your POD on screen and you tweak settings in it, then you can record into a program of your choice. |
