How to use plugins effectively.

Yo all.

After my first dive into the world of home audio recording, I've discovered that creating good sounding music is a lot more than just putting all of the instruments together in an mp3 and being done with it.

I saw one post in here of a guy that used DKFH and a POD to record something for his friend. The tone on the recording was MASSIVE. Granted the guitar was using an impulse, but the drums were HUGE. I can only conclude that it takes just the right amount of doctoring to get everything to sound good.

Now since I'm not very adept in all of this and I'm going to be producing my band's first EP, I'm not sure where to start. Naturally, by using Drumkit from Hell and a POD, we're already going to sound better than 98% of the metal EPs around here, where everyone uses a Marshall stack bass and treble at 10, mids at zero, and like one mic on the drumkit..that the singer is also using for his vocals.

But I don't want to stop there. I want to sound REALLY, really good. I'm pretty set on using FL Studio 7 to do this whole thing, because I've become extremely comfortable with the way it works. While it may not be the best for a lot of things, I'm not going to be doing a whole lot anyways.

MY PLAN:
-Program drums with DKFH
-Synth on the Axiom into FL
-Guitars and vocals recorded with Audacity

From there, would I need to import the mp3s of the guitars and vocals into FL Studio to mix them appropriately?

My main problem seems to be getting DKFH to sound right. The bass drums are really loose and floppy sounding and I seem to epic phail at using the DKFH mixer. Any insight? What kind of plugins would be good for Drumkit?

What about vocals? We're just using the mic (not a condenser or anything) set up in a closet full of stuffed animals (cheap insulation, what can I say ) into the POD. What do you guys normally do to your vocals to make them sound good? Delay? Chorus? Reverb? English muffins? Plugins?

Anyone who replies to this with help is amazing.
