Building a NEW Cpu!!! Need HELP!!!

I am in the process of building a new computer and i am looking to upgrade to Windows Vista. I was wondering if anyone has had any issues at all with Vista and recording in general? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I agree with Apophis.

And you're not building a CPU, are you? Millions and millions of little transistors.. that'd be pretty hard to do by hand!

With every new version of Windows comes problems with current software. Wait until Vista is patched with SP1 at least and whatever software you have is approved for Vista SP1.

I know the user protection stuff in Vista has caused me a ton of headaches in software I use at work and code in a few apps I have written.

Another vote for XP. My guitar player was using Vista with his recording gear, and some of the drivers didn't work.

I would say, xp because

1 its cheaper unless U R a H4x0rz

2 Its not quite the resource hog (which is a reason EVERYONE has about every operating system that comes out of the predecesser)

3 Xp handles most drivers (if not all) for your peripherals.

other than sticking with vista, what other advice is there for building a recording machine? I'm looking at doing this too since my Mac took a shit on me. What are the best parts / things to be careful for / how much should you expect to spend? I've had a hard time finding much straightforward info on this subject.

Get XP. ANd if you want vista as well, then dual boot your machine onto seperate drives. It's not hard to do. That way you can also segregate operating systems and keep one clean for music, and use the other for apps and games. Like having two pc's in one

Not sure if the mother board is fucked or not. whats really awsome is that I bought it used a year ago so there's no warranty. I was never all that impressed with the Mac so I'm considering building or buying a PC and going back to Windows. Not totally sure yet. All I know is I cant afford to buy a new Mac and the for the cost of fully repairing mine I could probably build something faster anyway.

Also, if you have to prioritize where the money goes, spend it on a good motherboard and good memory. Don't buy cheap memory! I haven't used Vista, but I hear a lot of horror stories. I use XP and have very few problems.

what are good brands of boards and memory?
what about Athlon vs. Pentium processors?
are computer parts like gear in the aspect that just because it's expensive doesn't mean it's good?
also, is it better to have one big hard drive or multiple drives?

Multiple drives, for sure; you should always keep apps and data on separate drives. If you're worried about one drive dying, you could get two drives for your data, a RAID controller card and mirror them, which basically means that the data is written to both drives so that, if one of the drives goes tits up on you, the data is still safe on the other drive in the array

I'm shopping about for a new machine to run Cubase SX with DFHS and lots of other plug-ins on. Some of the benchmarks I'm setting myself (and hoping to exceed) are:
2.4 ghz dual processor with 2mb+ cache
2gb of ram
Mobo that'll take 4 sticks of 667 or 800 speed ram and oodles of pci slots.

And I'm another one for the XP-brigade. It simply works.

XP is tried and true. Vista is a resource pig even with Areo turned off. Why cause yourself unnecessary headache?

Not that I'm aware of. I can't think of a laptop manufacturer that would sacrifice form factor for storage capacity, especially considering laptops aren't meant to replace desktop machines where you can shovel as much disk space in as you wish
