Shure SM Series Vs. Beta Series

I searched and didn't find any topics of this sort, so hopefully I am not ruffling any feathers

I am rather close to buying an SM57 for recording. Industry standard, using it to mic a 2x12 cab, blar de blar de blahhh.

I came across the Beta series version of this mic, the Beta 57A. It's $40 more, and has a different grille design. Now I don't know which to get. Reviews seem to indicate that the Beta is preferred to the SM, but I can't tell what the real difference is between the two.

Does anyone have the Beta 57A? Anything you can tell me about it? Is the extra $40 worth it? What are the differences between the two mics?

I have both. The beta 57 is only used as a last resort.

i'll ask my buddy tonight
hes got all this memorized from recording school
a dual setup of 2 57s is actually recommended, cancels out the high end fizz that overdrive puts out

Reverse Headstocks or Bust

Oh, and...

My vote's for a third-party candidate, the all-powerful Audix i5.

+1

I've heard many great things about these, have yet to try one on a guitar amp though.

Oddly enough I asked the 57 or i5 question here too and got way more votes for the SM57
