![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Mike - yeah, these were the amps for the Pharaoh recording session. Matt & Gary were down with their toys. Here was the run down: Rhythm Guitars: The main sound was from the Mesa Road King. It was by far the best sounding amp for this task, to our ears. We used an AnalogMan tubescreamer in front of it. The Splawn QuickRod was used for the center rhythm track (there are L, R and C rhythm tracks). It was too dark for the main sound, but filled out some of the mid range girth that the Mesa didn't. We used the TS in front of this as well. Lead Guitars: The Soldano HotRod with an XOTIC AC Boost is the main lead sound. It's super creamy sounding, just like you'd expect a Soldano to be. The Mesa RK on the 3rd channel w/ the TS provided the melody and harmony guitar sound. We cranked the mids, and got a very "violin" sound out of it, which works perfectly for the multiple layers in the project. Clean Guitars: For sparkley cleans, the Powerball beat out the Savage. The Savage was just too "plinky", but we did need "plinky" in one spot. For the warmer cleans, we used Ch.1 & 2 on the RK. Dirty Guitars: For the in-between sounds, we used the RK on channel 2, brit mode, with a Fulltone Full Drive in front. All of the guitars went into a Mesa 4x12 w/ v30s, mic'd with an SM57 and a Royer 122, into API 3124+ preamps. Bass Guitars: For the main bass sound we used the SVT Classic with the TS in front. For the distorted bass sounds we used the 5150 into an Ampeg 6x10 cab. ...To answer which one wins: we could have done the whole album with the Road King. The other amps each added something different, but we could have gotten really, really close with the RK. I personally really liked the Splawn, and I have always loved the Soldano. The Savage and 5150 I won't miss now that they're gone. The Powerball, which is mine, is probably not going to stay around much longer. |
