Heavy Sound For Recording

In my quest for obtaining a great heavy sound, I have tried a number of distortion pedals and several amps. Obviously, playing a 7-string gets you much closer to a truly 'heavy" sound, but I am trying to get that dual/triple rectifier sound on a small budget for my home project studio.

I have a Presonus Firebox as my computer interface, to which is attached my IBZ 7620. I have tried several plugins, like Amplitube or Izotope Trash for distortion, but I just can't get "that sound." I don't have the money to go out and buy a dual-rec + a mesa cabinet, plus I don't need that kind of volume. I can either go with a computer plugin (I use Ableton Live 5 for recording, BTW, so it would need to be a VST plugin) or a smaller amp that produces good distortion at a low/reasonable volume.

This is strictly for recording, not for gigs. I play mostly industrial metal stuff. Perhaps with more tweaking, I could come close with Trash, but I would be interested in hearing what you guys use. Thoughts?

a_daft_punk is on a distinguished road
I would highly recommend one of the POD series from Line 6. Awesome sounds in a small package and can double up as a live tone source.

A Line6 POD probably would be your best bet. You can find an older version for pretty cheap I imagine. Or pick up a new Behringer V-Amp2 for 99 bones.

Native Instruments has an awesome product called Guitar Rig that I use. It does take a lot of tweaking between getting your sound card setup right (be sure to use ASIO drivers) and working with your host software. If you already have Sonar (or a VST host), then check it out. If not, it might be a bit pricey for your needs. It's very customizable, comes with a four different amp models, 16 cabinets, a bunch of different mics, and a shitload of effects.

Sam Ash in my area regularly has sales of X dollars off when you spend at least $200/300/400. Recently it was $100 off purchases $400 and up and I considered buying the POD XT Live, as I could get it for $300. But I have read mixed reviews... What do you guys think?

Save your money, buy a Rocktron Chameleon on Ebay for less than $200. That's what I use, have used for years, and swear by. Much more flexible than any POD unit, and arguably better sounding, even by itself, for direct recording. That's my $.02

+1 to the Vamp! I have the Vamp2, and the Amp sim is great! Bang for the buck it's hard to beat. The Rocktron, as Vince mentioned, is also a fabulous piece of guitar gear!

another +1 to the Vamp (what? that makes it +4 for it total?). I have a 100 watt V-ampire that I bought for under $300. It has 16 amp simulations and 16 effects (plus configurable reverb and noise gate). Good stuff. And you can also set it to "midi", "drive", or "cabinets." Surprisingly, I think "midi" sounds the best. Other people may disagree.
