When will I learn?

Well again I have lost about five months of Protools files because of a computer issue. This also happened about a year ago for the same reason and I told myself to backup everything up on a weekly basis after the first time..... Did I? NO!
So I lost what I considered some pretty good stuff which I probably won't be able to recreate. Time to start over....again

I'm in the process of building a studio in my garage so I'm going to be starting from scratch again hopefully within the next month or so.

I totally feel for you man.

Backing up is all about a state of mind I think. If you stop to consider how your precious data is physically stored - as billions of unimaginably small molecules with a certain magnetic orientation representing 1 and another representing 0, and how delicate the whole magnetic disk storage design is - then I find that a strong motivation to back up anything I've put any work into.

My attitude is: if I don't have multiple copies of any document which I value, then I might as well consider it gone, because if my drive fails, there's no guarantee I'll ever see that data again. Whenever I record anything I don't consider it finished until it's on both my backup drives as well as my main drive.

I'm not intending any kind of lecturing tone here, just trying to share what has worked for me and encourage myself as much as anyone else to keep up the discipline it takes to keep my backups current.

Um, on the bright side, your reasons for not finishing your CD are WAY better than mine...

I'm referring, of course, to your "A-Rod for President" user title. I'm sorry, Yankees fans don't even like A-Rod. I had no idea your delusions had gone so far...

That same thing happened to me too!

I had a lot of killer ideas on my Pc when it crashed and erased all the data...

I was seriously pissed, since I was in the middle of making a 30min epic song, I had 15 minutes allready done and then

That was the only thing I didn't have a copy of... But well, I remember the melodies and riffs very well, so it wasn't a total bummer. I just had to record them again.

Nowdays, I take care of my "precious" files and I make sure that I have everything backed up.

I suppose I do have a valid reason now for not having a CD done, but it still hurts that I lost some good stuff.
Now what's your excuse????

As for the Yankees and my "A-Rod for President" user title, you make a damn good point. That's pretty sad that's the only bright spot in the season thus far and that I'm actually being pro A-Rod. I guess that can only mean one thing- the Yankees are in last place.

YYZ2112, not sure what your issue was, but a separate drive or at last a separate partition for your audio files is a good start (you still need to backup). but when you OS goes upside down, your data will be fine.

i had a drive crash on me once and i was able to get the data off with Restorer2000. i slaved the drive off a good machine and was able to recover a lot. but drive failures are hit and miss in terms of salvaging data

I intend to do a partition next time at the very least. I just get lazy at times and don't do the things I should be doing when it comes to making sure I have all my bases covered with my files. It was stupid and I have no excuse for not being better prepared for these type of harddrive issues.
