Digital multi-track recorders

this isn't for me, it's for a non-musician friend of mine, who, along with some other friends of hers, is looking to buy something in the $400 range for another friend of theirs. i suggested software if the recipient has a decent computer, but it doesn't sound like that's an option (he has a slow old Dell).

so basically, can anyone give some thoughts on digital multi-track recorders in the $400 range, that have good sound quality, are easy to use, and have a large capacity?

How many tracks does he need? I think Boss makes a cheap 8-track that might work...

..but honestly, he's better off just buying a cheap, stripped down computer and recording on that. For $400, if he already has a monitor and keyboard and whatnot, he should be able to put something together that'll handle recording better than any digital 4-8 track on the market I can think of...

Pick up a used Roland VS series. They're cheap, good, and reliable, and there's a huge amount of net support for them...

Division - American metal that doesn't suck. Much. Even on MySpace, and Soundclick, too.

that $400 would have to also include the software, though....

I use a VS-880 Xpanded. The 1680 is pretty damn cool, though.

How much is he looking to do? For freeware, there are options out there - The Pro Tools free version is save-enabled and 8 tracks, as I recall, and sony still offers a free version of Acid that you could use, 8 tracks as well, though I think you can't save.

Also, in freeware, there's Krystal Audio Engine, which looks quite good...

i'm not sure. this idea was mentioned to me by my non-musician friend, who basically just said to me "hey, i have this friend who plays bass and my friends and i wanted to get him something to record with, do you have any recommendations?"
