![]() | How would you do it... Recording advice needed So my band is going to record a cheap, tangible demo to hand out to people at gigs and stuff. We record all our practices and whatnot on our drummer's laptop then he edits them. They actually turn out somewhat decent for using the laptop's internal mic. I am not sure what specific program he uses but he is pretty good with it and he has done a bit of recording other bands. He picked up some decent drums mics recently and I picked up a Behringer V-Amp Pro. What we are going to do is record the drums first with some scratch guitar tracks, then record direct to his laptop for the guitars and bass. The problem we are running into is the drummer needs to hear both guitarists playing while he records instead of just one of us. I know one guy could go from the V Amp into some headphones and the drummer could go off that but how do we get both of us in the mix? Also, do you guys have any tips in general for recording like this? We are on a severely tight budget right now. We spent the last of our band dollhairs buying a seven for the other guitarist. We will now both be playing Washburn 7's. I am pretty darn excited. After Simon bites that Skeleton’s face in half, he is going to rape that hydra. That’s how Simon rolls.. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | You could pick up a cheap little mixer, like a Behringer or some such and just run both guitarists into that and hook up the drummer with headphones to the mixer. That's all I can think of at almost 4am ![]() How come he can't play with just one guitarist? |

![]() | I hear ya dude. Its only 10:00 pm here and I am tired as heck... So tired, in fact, that I completely overlooked that fact that all we need to do at first is record a few scratch tracks of both guitars for the drummer to listen to through head phones. Since we only have one recording device, the other guy could go first and then I could record my parts. We can always re-do them later. We then mic up the kit, press play, and listen to the drummer wail away on said kit. Now the question is, aside from the mics, headphones, laptop, studio monitors for playback then we do guitars, and V-Amp, what other affordable recording stuff could be useful in this situation? |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | are you recording to a click? Just wondering as you say you're doing the scratch guitars first. As far as equipment goes though, it sounds like you've got everything you need really. You could get a lava lamp, though! Every good studio needs a lava lamp. I blame the poor quality of my mixes on the fact that mine is cheap and crappy ![]() Also, better post some samples here for us when you do them! ![]() |

![]() | Yeah, my lava lamp needs a new bulb, so my recording mojo is running low at the moment :P. Thor, it sounds like your well on your way to the wonderful world of double-tracking. I wish you luck as you embark on many a late night recording venture ![]() Also, as an aside, try and accquire yourself a copy T-racks. It's a stand-alone mastering tool, which whilst sounding quite plastic, can bring life to most mixes and make them sound rather brutal. |
