auralex or sonex. period.
http://www.auralex.com/
lots of great info there also.
whatever you do, do not use packing foam, cheap foam from ebay etc. even though they claim to be fire retardent and equal to auralex or sonex, they ARE NOT.
spend the extra money on the real stuff. it's not worth your life to skimp on foam.

As to where to put the foam I'm not sure, I think it really depends on how the room sounds. If you covered everything I would imagine a very dead sounding room.

It's hard to beat a person who never gives up. Unless you have a stick. Then you can go to town.

Let's face it... foam is for killing reverberations. It's not for soundproofing, unless used between walls that are between walls.

The Auralex is horridly overpriced for what you get.

This stuff is just as good.

That sounds like the same type of thing as the eggcrates.... they literally do nothing for acoustics that matters.

I got a crapload of stuff that's pretty much the same as Auralex for dirt cheap on eBay.

as this is a subject that is very close to me, i apologize upfront for sounding like a dick. there is no comparison between foambymail and the cheap shit you find on ebay.
not only from a safety standpoint, but also an acoustical one. there is a reason auralex and sonex make acoustical foam and not mattresses or packing foam. they make a product that is designed to tame reflections. go to any real studio and guess what you see, auralex, sonex and some higher end absorbtion, diffussion etc..
not eggcrate mattress foam.
from a safety standpoint, watch the following video and make your own choice. this was cheap mattress foam.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=nMyQ5xPOHF0

all so they could save about $500. if you want to take a chance like that, there are bigger issues at stake than saving a few bucks. you can effectively treat a control room for well under $500. and a live room for about $500.
and for those that say you won't be doing any pyro, what about a short in an outlet, or an amp etc. there are too many things that can and do go wrong with electricity in a house that could cause a disaster.
for those that don't know, this week is the anniversary of the Station Nightclub fire in Rhode Island. more than 100 people died in that fire, because of the cheap foam.
having played there at least 150-200 times and gone there well over 1000 times, and knowing people that died and survived the fire, this is a very difficult subject for me.
especially driving by it several times a week.
spend the money, do it right, and do it safe.
Ron

Yeah, if you're running a big-time, professional studio, I can understand going with Auralex.

Who the fuck here is doing that, aside from Crooks, who knows whatsup?
