Recording with an M-Box

Sorry if this has been discussed before...

I've had my M-Box for about a year and a half or more now, and I'm sorry to say that I don't have more to show for it. The main reason I haven't recorded is because I haven't found a free drum-tracking proggy that works well with Pro-Tools, at least not for death metal. But that's not my problem.

I've always plugged my guitar into my rackmounts and then into the M-Box, which gives me a very thin, digital sound. I'd like to record with my stack into a studio mic, but do not have a sound proof room. I was hoping to hear from some other M-Box users, to hear how you guys do your recordings. I also have a Behringer mini mixing board I can utilize if that helps anything. Thanks in advance.

I don't have the M Box but I am running it's big brother the Digi 002. For recording guitars I just send either a Shure Sm 57 or a Sennheiser E609 right into the mic pres and away we go.

Have you looked at Drumkit For Hell for drums. I haven't used it but it gets great reviews. I either use standard acoustic drums, electronic drums, or my personal favorite hybrids.

You'll have to find/make patches that sound like your live patches for direct recording.
It wouldn't hurt to make sure you have some kind cab emulater in thier too.

One of the things I like to do when recording direct is use this-http://www.zzounds.com/item--ARTV3?trk=smx
Cheap-and it warms up the signal some and takes the edge off a lot.
Lots of recording experts said I was nuts or full of BS-but it worked..

A POD is the only thing that I've found which has a decent sound for direct recording on a computer. I have the MBox and use a POD. I like heavy stuff and death metal. I mean, you're going to have to go to a real studio, if you want real quality, but it works for demos.

As for drums, the free Fruity Loops works great. I think it has a kit called "real drums" or something. Program your song and export as a wav file, then import to ProTools. Or, get yourself a copy of ACID and make loops. FL has an option to ACIDize the wav when you export. Works great.

Good luck!

Behringers cheap and good cab sim $50

otherwise Pod, V-amp, or Guitar Rig has good cab emulations.

Yeah, the "real drums" kit in Fruity Loops is quite useable, although while it's easy to make simple beats, it can take rather a while to make complex stuff - worth it, IMO.
