New Bulb Mix Test Clip! Feedback and Criticism greatly appreciated!
Hey guys,
Im trying out a pretty much brand new mix for myself while sticking to pretty much the same ingredients: Dfhs and my Podxt. I decided to rerecord a short clip of an already existing song so that i could get some good a/b comparisons and i like the way it is sounding so far. I was going for a more open and natural drum sound and i changed a few things on the guitar and bass patches as well. Also i went for a slightly more compressed overall mix to give it a bit more of that "in your face" quality to it. I was hoping for some good old constructive criticism and any tips you may have to offer to improve the production, especially if you have some good revealing monitors (which i still need to get...being poor is totally overrated!) Here is the link to the clip: http://www.soundclick.com/bulb (its the first song on the list, not the one that plays by default) or this to direct link: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getpl...d=5006554&q=hi thanks guys, hope ya like it!! |

Sounds perfect through my work PC speakers. The only criticism I can think of is that your production quality is making everyone else's sound really bad. Everything is too perfect. Now most of the cds in my collection are sounding as cheap and unmastered as And Justice For All or Enemies of Reality. Now for your composition and song structure: too many notes. You're not going to appeal to the consummate Jessica Simpson fan writing that kind of self-indulgent nonsense. You need to simplify, dumb it down a little, and stop simultaneously intimidating Thordendal, Holdsworth, Masvidal, and the entire Trans-Siberian Orchestra. You really don't want to see Alex Skolnick cry; he literally weeps. It's fucking embarrassing.
Bulb, seriously, my wife and I, and even our 15 month old are huge fans of yours. My little guy loves to headbang to 'The Walk' and 'Icarus Lives' from your Periphery myspace page. Even if he's pissy or throwing a tantrum, he'll stop in his tracks and groove to your shit. We love your music, it fucking owns!!! And of course you're making our job as parents easier. Now why the bloody gerbil-pakcing skullfuck are you not signed?????????????? "Dude, you need to find the right fucking meds to be on, because you are the most unstable person I know." ^^^I don't know whether to rep bulb or you, hahaha.
I think you said in a different thread that you wanted a third guitarist to recreate all the overdubs? If you want a more "open" sound, might I suggest using keyboard patches for the overdubs rather than guitar? I figure a keyboard could add a depth to your sound that an extra guitar wouldn't replicate. I have no skill at all in mixing and everything I'm saying is purely speculative, but personally, it could add another dimension to an already HUGE sound. |

Man, it sounds perfect! It sounds as good/better than commercially produced CDs. I find it hard to think anyone would dislike it.
I wish you would come and produce me. Shit! Teach me how you do that. it sounds fantastic. ![]() |

First off, thats awesome man, really good production for someone working at home! But I know you wanted some constructive criticism, so I'll do my best haha:
The guitars sound a little thin IMO, and are maybe a tiny bit too quiet (the distorted guitars that is). I think maybe a little more mid frequencies on the patch wouldnt do any harm. Also I think maybe the drums, the snare especially seem to take over the mix a tiny bit, but this might go away if you turn the guitars up a tad though. However like I said it's really a great mix! I did have to think for a while and listen to it a few times to come up with these points, but I'm not complaining haha. Btw, are you planning to do a solo instrumental album someday? That would kick ass. |
