How's this for a decent recording laptop?
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...769&CatId=1891
Any suggestions to look for a better portable recording setup? I'll probably be using this with an Mbox2. Would it be better to get the USB Mbox or the Pro with Firewire to run with this??

You're going to be reaaaally wanting a Dual-Core processor, and 2GB of RAM. The latter won't come stock.
You're also going to need an external harddrive if you want to do any serious kind of recording. Internal 2.5" HDD's just can't handle it, unless you specifically upgrade to a 7200RPM drive, and have 2 partitions on it. (One system, one recording). Get something with a Firewire port, or a PCMCIA slot so you can add a firewire port. |

Yeah, that's what I had thought. I'm really considering this one for now. I can always bump up the RAM a bit and I have an external HD now. But knowing me, I'll keep looking around for a couple of weeks until I find one I've just gotta have in my budget.

I'd personally hold out for a Dual-Core... it just makes things run really smoothly. I never get into more than 75% resources being used (1.83 Core Duo, 2G RAM), and thats with 15+ audio tracks w/plugs, DFHS w/plugs, and other crap running in the background.

you arent gonna get a mac for that price
you definitely want to get a pc the only thing is as jeff said, dual core makes a HUGE difference because most daw's are designed with a dual core setting and its like night and day honestly. there are 3 things you need to focus your cash on in a recording computer: CPU RAM and your Soundcard it always helps to have a lot of hd space, but in a laptop that is expensive so once again i agree with jeff and you should get an external. Honestly tho, you would save so much/get so much more out of a desktop, you should really consider it. And as a general rule in life Firewire > Usb (at least as far as soundcards and large hard drives go) |
