Vocal recording question.

I'm working on recording a cover of Testament's Alone In the Dark.. When i tried to add the backing vocals parts to make it sound like the 'group vocals' that thrash metal is so noted for, and just had the same effect as double tracking a guitar.. it just sounded oddly thicker. Is there a way to get that 'group vocal' thing going on without actually recruiting 3-4 of my friends to do it ?

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,
Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie,
Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee
Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread
Its branches like a Temple overhead.

Newkie is a jewel in the rough
I have only read about this but you could try it and see if it works.
First you record the vocals on one track. After that you copy the track, at least one time, and then you have to play with the EQ a bit.
One track should have highs and some lows and on the other track you just invert the previous EQ settings.

If you have three tracks of more then you do it like this
- bass-low mid (first track)
- mid-high mid (second track)
- treble (third)

I hope I'm making sense here

I can't guarantee that this will work as I have only read about it but it can't hurt to try!

do you think some kind of strong chorus or detune effect would get it? or would it end up sounding more like Blind Guardian doing a thrash song?

Also, should i offset the tracks slightly, as well? like, one millseconds before and after the original track?

I'll try that when i retrack the vocals and whatnot later.. i gotta re-do a couple of rhythm tracks, since i moved the mike between recording tracks and i want them to be consistent sounding.

Maybe you could record a couple of takes where you sing it differently (alter your voice, inhale some helium or something)

I guess you'll just have to get your friends to do some backing vox

That's the only way I can think of for getting an authentic-sounding thrash/punk group vocals (I think thrash got the group vocals from punk which has had it from the beginning and still has them today).
