For making metal drum tracks do you need dfh and a drum pad
I'm planning to get Ezdrummer, but will the 80$ price tag come with enough stuff for making a good metal track or do I really need to buy dfh as an expansion.
Also, would need to use a drum pad for writing drum patterns or can I just use a mouse and maybe the keyboard |

You need a paid version for VST support. Reaper is alright, I found myself making more progress with S1 over reaper since it was more intuitive and simple to use.

Better sound, only if your willing to drop some serious time and effort into it. Also, it cost A LOT. Upside is is that you learn a bunch, at least I have.
Still though, Slate slays, and can be as good as SD2 |

I would get Ez drummer with the metal machine expansion. I don't know if they still have it but they were having a sale on toontrack products. I bought ez drummer for 65 dollars and metal machine for 39 dollars!. For metal it seems best to just program the drums with a mouse rather than trigger pads.

I'm not sure how it works for other programs other than Cubase 5, but to write the drums, you use the Draw tool to create a waver (drag it as long as you need drums for) then once it's drawn, you just double click the waver you just drew, use the drumstick tool, and start clickin' like a ,madman!
This is all after you've selected your drum program as a VST instrument. Another little pointer (*my experience is only with Windows*): if by chance your recording program doesn't seem to want to recognize your ins and outs (Line 6 POD HD Pro in my case), go to your recording devices and disable them, and do the same for playback devices. This stops windows from trying to use your devices but your recording program should still recognize them; worked for me! Personal soundcloud: http://soundcloud.com/WorstCaseOntario |
