Need help/tips with recording ambient/dynamic post/prog rock- Isis, Tool, Neurosis,et

Title pretty much explains it.

Every time i can write a song NO problem in this style music, esp on acoustic or just jamming around, bt trying to get something recorded is a whole diffestory....

Mainly i record stuff from my bands, sludge, doom, stoner rock and my other band is in the vein of Opeth meets Amon Armoth, but i have an albums worth of personal songs similar to Isis, Tool, and Neurosis and ive had nothing but headaches so far.

Mainly i use a HD500, lecto, nick crowe. amps, so i have the tone, and i use auperior for drumswhich has a great danny carrey-esque custom preset, so i have the sound, but getting my guitar ideas into song form is killing me. Reaper is my DAW if that helps....

Ive tried playing each riff with a metronome, but still just isnt working for me.

I also play drums, so would a sound to midi converter work better for me?(drumagog)

Any help would sure be a lifesaver! Thanks guys!
