Pitching down guitars to the Bass Range

I've seen about 3 or 4 people pitch down a guitar to emulate a bass guitar, does this actually give the depth and feel of a bass guitar in your mix?

I'm interested to try it out but I don't know how to pitch shift it down effectively without it sounding like complete ass, does anyone have a way of going about it?

I used to be an arrow like you
But then I took a rock to the knee
Soundcloud was arrow to the knee

i dont think it would really fit well, at least it never did for me but Browne from Monuments used a pitch shifted guitar afaik for their stuff in the beginning and it sounds pretty decent.

Neck pup or neck/middle combo, tone knob down* > compressor > Octave down > 50 hz high pass if too boomy/murky > whatever else you want to do to it.

if you want a real pedal for your octaver (for live use, etc.) try the micro-pog, it's great.
* : Tone knob doesn't need to be ALL the way down, even half will work, but many like it all the way down since it makes it less obvious that it's really a processed guitar.
