Building my recording PC, few questions?

Firstly Im new to recording completly, I have a tascam dp-01, but frankly rarely us it simply because I cant afford monitors for it but with the advent of digital recording I have been building a pc up for a while now and I have a few simple questions.

firstly sound cards, what would be a good sound card to purchase that I will not only be able to do *good* recording, but also do gaming and watch dvd's, etc. on without getting glitchy (I have heard about this happening)

next I already know Im going to have 4 gigs of memory in this machine so thats not a problem, but hard drive space, what should I go for? obviously recording can take up some space, so should I go for terebyte of HD space or more?

also Recording programs? what would you guys suggest for a begginer like myself? I would like something that is easy to use but can yield extremely good results

Ok. What do you plan on recording? guitars? drums? etc..Also how do you plan to record? like via firewire interfaces? Depending you won't even need a soundcard.

obviously I will be recording guitar/bass, but I want to also be able to do synth work (which is not a problem with software synths, i just need a midi interface there, m-audio makes those) I would also like to do vocals, and possibly drums as well, as for how I would like to record, I know I dont want to go direct with the guitars unless I absolutly have to

HOw can you not be able to afford a set of monitors for the tascam, yet you're dumping all this money into a computer?

4 gigs of RAM? What exactly are you going to do that requires that much RAM? You should be ok with 1-2 gigs. Take the money you save there and put it towards some decent monitors.

dude dont get 4 gigs, windows cant allocate more than 2 effectively and even if it could, chances are your recording software wont be able to make use of it. (not even nuendo 3 can effectively use more than 2gb, not that you would even need that much realistically).
Here is what you focus on:
Get a dual core cpu (those new intels are cheap and AMAZING as well as super overclocking friendly)
Get LOTS of reliable HD space, just browse newegg and see whats hot, i dont reccomend raiding drives for space but duplicate raiding (i forget the codes cuz im lame) is good but spensive! A 7200 rpm drive is more than adequate for audio work.
Get your system cooled, get a healthy amount of quiet but efficient ventilation because your system will be taxing your cpu pretty much the whole time you are mixing, oh and get arctic silver cuz that shit ftw!
Get the most modest video card that can run your screen setup. Remember, you dont need an 8800GTX to run cubase...
Get a solid motherboard, it holds everything together so get something reliable (once again browse newegg)
And finally put some money aside for a decent audio interface and some monitors and you will be all set!
Remember if you want the best out of your system you will keep your horse porn and video games and interwebz OFF of this computer!

Good advice Bulb, but not everyone can justify dedicating a computer just to music. I do pretty much everything on one machine, including horse porn, and I have no problems when it comes to recording.

I have to do the same right now cuz my other comp crapped out on me, but my computer ran WAAAAY faster when it was dedicated!

DSS3 is just really niceDSS3 is just really nice
Honestly, if you keep your computer up to date as far as anti-virus and anti-spyware crap, don't fap, don't download music, don't click on side banners and ad's, don't torrent, and generally just take good care of it, it should be fine for recording and doing everything else, too.

That said, I do all my torrenting, horsep0rn, fapping, etc, and have no problems whatsoever. With my Mac, I can have a new girl every night with no worry of virus's. It's like a permanent, fail-proof rubber!
