Can't really comment until we know what you're working with (you could be great using certain things or rubbish using others )

It's not bad... the mix is quite boomy, and there are some off things in the drum panning to my ears.

The vocals sit strangely in the mix (not bad, just odd)

And the whole mix sounds like you're hammering the master bus hard.

Dude I thought that sounded absolutely amazing. You could ease off the mastering a bit, but otherwise sounds stellar. As far as guitar and drum sounds go, flawless victory \m/

No this is what I meant.

If you were using Superior 2 and Axe FX it would be pretty meh... but you're obviously not...

so what ARE you using for Drums and guitar/bass sounds? What DAW are you using?

Well in that case, this is a really impressive mix.

The drums are wicked, well miced and mixed for real drums. I would perhaps next time use a condenser on the snare as well, just to get more of the snap.

Also, maybe don't pan the Toms so hard, there is a bit of distortion of the stereo field between the overheads and the Tom panning... but the micing itself is pretty good.

The Jazz mixes aren't mine, they're the other Engineer in the business Stuart Hope's (he's an actual Engineer, I'm more of the producer)

He did them all in pro studios, and some of them were miced quite differently. I'll try and remember as best as possible.

Summertime and All the things you are - A single RODE K2 on the drums, a single RODE K2 on the piano, I can't remember but I think the Bass was both DIed out from the amp as well as miced with an MD441 and I can't remember what the vocal mic, but knowing Stu it was either a Neumann U87 or an AKG C414 for Fran depending on what sounded best in the room. Done on an old Sony Analogue console to Pro Tools HD

Rhiannon - was the same for drums and piano, a Neumann KM84 for the Bass + a DI of the pickup (which I don't think he used in the final mix) and the AKG C414 for the vocals in this one. Same Sony console but onto Tape for this one I think (then bounced to Pro Tools)

I've got you Under my Skin and Moondance - Same for kick and Piano. DI Bass + AKG D112 on the Bass, U87 on the vocals and a KM184 for the sax. Also think there was a room mic for this one, but I can't remember what it was.

Superstition -
Kick AKG D112
Snare - Audix i5 and a KM84
OHeads - 2 Rode K2s
Bass - DI + MD421
Guitar - AKG C414
Electric Piano - DI
Sax - KM184
Vocals - U87

This was done into a Neve Console (but I have no idea WHAT it was) at BJB studios to Tape then bounced to Pro Tools (It was quite a while ago)

And that's all the Jazz ones that are up there

If he had used a microwave for the guitars - would it be a better mix than a dual recto?

Well if he was using things like Neumann TLM 103s or similar for overheads and a Beyer MC930 on the snare alongside like a 57... in a treated room in a studio... I would have told him he's destroyed his overheads and his snare is not cracking like like I would expect it too because the attack on his snare compressor is too short... in that case it would be an average mix... not bad, but not "OMG OMG "

With what he was using however he has done REALLY well. Did we know anything about his setup beforehand? Nope.

It's good, but I reckon it would be just that ever so slight amount better if you tried using a good condenser. You'll get more body and crack and all the goodness of the snare

Also, did you get someone to design your treatment, or are you just doing it all yourself?

I've been wondering, What would be a good condenser to use on the snare. Sorry to butt in

In the cheaper range, a RODE NT3 can be an ok condenser, or an AT2021.

The best I've ever heard were Neumann KM83/84 and their newer counterparts the KM183/184.

I also really like a Beyer MC930 which is pretty darn close to the Neumanns.

You could also try an AKG C414-XLS.

This mix is ....ing awesome.

+1 on the master thing and the vocals could be a HAIR louder, and I do mean just a hair.

Other than that kudos for making such a sick mix out of real instruments and amps. You see that rarely these days, I know I probably couldn't do it hahaha.

And this just further proves I need an Audient Mico, anytime I hear a guitar tone that involves it in some way or another (whether it be the mic preamp like this scenario or what was used to capture the guitar DIs for reamping like Nolly) the guitar tone is always perfect.
