I've played with Drop C on my Les Paul before, and really enjoyed it. Over the summer though, I set up my extended scale guitar for C standard (11-56 gauge strings) and loved it...ended up being my main guitar for a few months. I'm thinking, in a band format, a great two guitar lineup would be a six in that tuning, or Drop B flat, and my usual seven string tuning, which is B flat standard...
Funny, I'd shied away from drop D type tunings on the electric in the nineties, just because there were so many cliches associated with it, but I've always used them on acoustic guitar, and no quite a bit on my electrics. I while ago I set up my Jackson in Drop C#, as I was getting in quite a rut on the seven, and it was like learning to play the guitar again; found some really cool legato licks on the bass strings that would have been really hard to play on a normally tuned guitar.

Regarding anyone not doing anything interesting with Drop tunings, I refer you to the entire Kings X back catalogue...

Though I've said it a billion times, I'll say it again, I'm a huge Ty Tabor fan. He uses dropped tunings melodically and bone crushingly heavy. He even goes as low Drop G. Please Come Home...Mr Bulbous was in Drop A and sounds heavy as Hell, but he still plays in his usual melodic, catchy style. It's just some of the best music out there. The fact that Nickelback are millionaires and King's X aren't is one of life's great travesties.

We can console ourselves that Kings X will still have a career in 20 years time, whereas Nickelback won't...

LOL

Yeah Nickelback can't go away soon enough for me. It's amazing that King's X has stayed together as long as they have and still make killer music.

Dropped C is Vince's new favorite tuning.
I fart around w/this tuning on my C1, using baritone strings.

Um, why the .... would you group bands by how they tune? Who's doing anything even remotely new with standard E, DADGAD, or Q#, while we're at it?

I'd try to answer your question, but honestly what the guitars are tuned to is about the last thing I'm thinking about when I listen to a track, so I don't know if I could.

I feel the same way. It's a means to an end. I'm not going to listen to a track and say "They're playing in open Eb tuning" or some shit. I'm going to sit back and enjoy the song, and if something jumps out at me.... such as hearing the low B or A of a 7 string along with some high notes typically on a high E-string... I might say "Hey, they're playing 7s!" but that's about it.

It's all about the song.

From my studio experiments yesterday, we're using dropped C tuning on 2 songs. The songs were heavy in D tuning, but they didn't stack up well against the other songs we have on the 7-string. So I experimented with tuning down, and it turned out well

Yeah, I know how you really feel. Just had to take exception on principle. Loomis is terrific, but there's plenty of players out there who are equally inspiring, and many, with nowehere near the chops he has.

Vince... dunno if you saw this the first time around or not. But my Epi ZW is setup drop-C with 10-56 strings. Here's a clip.

Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, a lot of Dream Evil, and more use this tuning. It's quite fun, as you've experienced.

I could name a ton of bands innovating in E, and more than a few in open tunings (our beloved Devin), but that wasn't my point - I don't think about what the guitars are tuned to, I think about the riffs and arrangements. It just so happens that the most unoriginal/boring/uncreative riffs, IMO, come from drop C tuned bands.
