Recommendations for headphones...

I'm looking for a pair of headphones as mine are nearly dead. I plan on using these for...

<<

>>

*cough*mixing*cough*

* Battle-axe runs for cover

The only reason that I'm choosing this option is because I cannot afford decent monitors anytime in the near future. Anyway, I've been looking at the Audio Technica ATHM40fs but thought before I actually went and got a pair I'd ask for some suggestions. I'd like to keep it under 100$.

If you MUST mix on headphones, I'd recommend multiple pairs. There's also a plugin somewhere that simulates the stereo crossover that headphones lack, that should help, as well.

I LOVE my PX-100's for referencing tracks, and the HD280's do have good clarity, but lack bass and have a kind of harsh upper midrange. Take a favorite cd or three down to a shop or something - hell, bring an iPod, and try out as many as possible.

You're not going to get a good stereo image out of cheap headphones, ever. But I guess you can still adjust what it sounds like or whatever.

Let's try not to let this turn into ANOTHER headphones-vs-monitors debate, ok?

DSS3 is right here - grab a decent reference-grade set, but also grab like one of those cheap Sony clip-behind-your-ears sort of things you see a lot of people with, and if you have an IPod check mixes on the in-ear buds, too. The idea is to both get a pristine audio picture of what's happening in your mix, but also to be able to hear what the consumer is most likely to hear.

And periodically dump your mix down to mono, to watch for phase cancellation.

"...and everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon."

Sony MDRs. They're the studio standard for a reason.

Just beware of the shit ones, basically the V6 is the best model, not the horrible V600 or any of the other ones, the V6. There are some better older ones but you will have to search for them. (The 7506 is the V6 btw)

If you want truly good headphones, get some Sennheiser HD580, HD600 or HD650s...but you have to get a headphone amp to get the most from them because of their huge impedance. The Beyerdynamic DT880s are very good too.

Oh also Sony labels all of the headphones with the "MDR-" prefix.

But yes, the Sony's, AKG's, and Fostex's are the three I see in every freaking studio.
