Direct guitar

Hey guys,

Well this is my first thread, I've been thinkin about a 7 for a while, been lurkin here for a while, great forum!

Anyway,

What do you guys use to record direct guitar? I have a Pod 2.0 currently but the distortion is slightly lacking. Ever so slightly too spongy and muddy (originally thought that was my guitar but I've tried with loads) so now I'm looking for a new guitar device. Any ideas?

Cheers
Joe

P.S Would be helpful if it's portable, my studio WILL become laptop based in a few months time

Have you tried a PODxt? It's a huge improvement over earlier modellers.

Not for any length of time, my local guitar shops are losers when it comes to letting you really get a chance to try out some gear. Its 5 minutes then buy it or get out and if you've tried a modeller, you know five minutes isnt anywhere near enough to get a good picture of how decent it is. I'll see if I can scope the local guita scene and see if anyone has one.

Cheers
Joe

Surprisingly, the Johnson J-Station was one of the more organic modelers I've ever used - in particular, the two mesa (recto + Mark 1) models and the Fender Blackface models kill, although they're so bass-heavy that they'll sound like crap in a mix unless you run them through an external EQ, or switch to one of the 1x12 cabs.

That said, there's no substitute for a mic'd amp, and a good amp will still sound useable at bedroom volumes. even at whisper-quiet settings, I think my Nomad-45 sounds better than the J-Station for cutting leads.

I have a PODXT Live and I absolutely love it. It is a big improvement over the POD 2.0

I've got a POD XT Live that I was going to put on Ebay this week anyway. I'd sell it you for $375 shipped. It has both the expansion model packs loaded and is in great shape. I even have the original box and manual and stuff. Let me know if you'd be interested.

By the way, I'm only selling it because I've been using it for effects only for my guitar rig(s) and I'm going to pick up some dedicated rack stuff this week. The XTL is kind of overkill for what I've been using it for.

Gotta be able to cover a lot of bases, I need something versatile I can record just about any style of music with. And as for budget, erm.... lol try to keep on the low end of things but if it's really worth the extra bit of cash I'll go for it.

Cheers
