Mic vs preamp thingy

lol I'm a complete newb to recording (just to point that out)

Chemical Ltd | Buy ART - ART - ARTcessories Tube MP Studio V3 Preamp - Microphone at Chemical Ltd

that's what I have

Dunno if it's any good, should I be usin a mic to record with it? Alot of ppl seem to be mentioning shure mics and stuff.

I've seen alot of people use "pods" looked up line 6 pods, they seem to be roughly the same sorta thing which I'm using :o or are them line 6 x3 pods or whatever any better?

what you have is nothing like a pod. you have a preamp with a tube. a pod is a whole bunch of effects inside a little box. the mic that comes with it is for vocals

Haha, no worries man. It's much clearer now!

The ART Tube Preamp you have there is exactly that, a preamp. It's primarily a mic preamp, but it also functions as an instrument DI.

A lot of people here record with PODs, which are like a preamp, but a digital modeling preamp. So, they take your guitar signal and amplify it to line level, but have multiple amp models in it that you can choose from. Considering their fairly low price vs the amount of sounds you can get out of them, it's obvious why they are a popular choice.

If you just want to mic up your amp and record that way, I'm sure the ART would do just fine. But yeah, you'd definitely need a mic. The Shure SM57 is the industry standard for micing guitar amps, although it is by no means the be-all, end-all.

Myself, I have a PODxt (previous version of the POD X3) and rarely use it. I have a rackmount guitar preamp that I use to record straight into impulse responses.

Also, what you could do for recording is download some of the free Amp simulation plugins (SoloC, Nick Crow 8505 & 7170, etc) which do an awesome job as well. That way you can use your ART as a instrument DI, record the dry guitar, apply the Amp sim & the Impulse, and you have a great sounding guitar tone

yeahhh, that's the mic I've heard everyone talking about xD Shure SM57, so I'd be set for recording decently if I just got that mic?

also how can pods vary your tone so much, is it like, you can edit the tone when it's on your computer? I think my mate has one then.. like you have a choice of all these tones you can get?

You'd probably be good to go with a 57. Keep in mind though that when recording with a mic, mic placement, speaker type, cabinet, even the room will play a factor.

The PODxt & X3 have a little LCD screen on them where you can edit the settings for the different amps & effects. If you hook them up to your computer you can edit it there too, using the Line 6 software.
