Latency issue

Hey guys. I've just run into a latency issue on what I thought was a perfectly working set up
I'm running a Firestudio Project 0 latency interface into my pretty standard PC. PC can handle HUGE projects ok. However, one thing I have never happened to do until now is Input Monitoring within Sonar.
This means I mute the input from the Presonus and do not hear it until I turn Input Monitoring on in Sonar. I am now hearing the Sonar sound instead of the interface.
Latency playing through here seems fine - now the reason I got round to doing this is I am using amp sim plugins for the first time to record some DI tracks for later re-amping. I've jammed with amp sim plugs before with Input Monitoring and latency was fine. However, when the project is playing (that is, playing or recording) latency has become an issue. The Sonar sound of my guitar comes in about 500ms late This is also without the amp sim plug turned on.

It's worth noting this only happens when my project reaches a certain complexity. This particular session has 8 drum tracks with full mixing on about 10 busses, about 20 plugin fx on the busses, plus my guitar in track. If I disable all but 3 of the plugins, I can play my guitar during playback/record. Hit the 4th, and latency becomes slightly audible.

Question is...why This is not a big project for my PC, performance meters are all good.

Halp please

EDIT: Don't know if it's normal or not, but if I try and record a track with this latency, whilst it's somewhat offputting, the result recording IS in time on playback. It's purely live it's an issue.

You should try to "freeze" any and all tracks, that way you can free up cpu/memory for your input monitoring. Just right click on the track and you will get your "freeze" options.

Wherher or not this helps, my brother in law introduced me to a free software that reduces latency, its called "Asio4All" and that seemed to do the trick, it basically puts a bit more processing load on your computer's CPU but it does work in reducing latency.

Thanks for the replies! Freeze track is indeed useful, though I was just wondering why this latency was being caused by a project that me PC was handling with ease.
That software sounds interesting - I will look into it though I'm not sure it will fix the problem now I have found out what it actually is;

Since posting this, I found out that it was caused by plugins that use PDC on my drums. I forgot what PDC actually stands for now...Perhaps Plugin Delay Compensation or something.
Basically any plugins which induce latency (many within Sonar apparently) make all the other audio tracks shift to match up if I understand it right.
Basically, I should avoid PDC Plugins until tracking is done
