Song I just recorded. Feedback on song+mixing very much appreciated.

Hi!

I just recorded a song I wrote quite some time ago. The song was inspired by bands such as TesseracT, Textures etc... (obviously)

You can listen to the song here: SoundClick artist: Red StaTic - For fans of Slipknot, Korn, Fear Factory, Meshuggah, eh...if you like metal chance is you might like

or download it from here http://martin.mudpusher.net/metal9.mp3 if you feel like you wanna take a stab at the mixing.

Cheers!

The not so good:

Snare is far, far too roomy (all of the drums are, in fact), so it gets pushed way into the background. Some of the playing seems a bit sloppy in parts - you're slightly ahead of the kick every now and then. The mix as a whole is quite muddy and hard to distinguish exactly what's going on (especially guitars-wise). The bass is a touch too prominent most of the time (and sounds as though it's been programmed without much attention paid to making the velocities realistic).

The good:

That bass tone is beastly; really nice stuff. Is it programmed, out of interest? The slightly artificial feel would suggest so, but the tone is better than anything I've heard from a programmed bassline before! The song itself sounds like it could be a damn good tune with some slightly tighter playing and a less muddy mix. Enjoyable grooves all round.

Thanks. I know about the playing, I have lost a little interest in guitar and music lately, so to be honest I've barely played anything at all during this year. As for the bass, yes it's programmed. Spectrasonics Trilogy is what I used, I made two different bass tracks with two different presets.

Regarding the mud I have basically no idea at all what's happened to my mixing. I made recordings like 1,5 year ago that sounded a lot more clear. But I guess it's because of my sloppy playing and the fact I haven't restrung my guitar for sometime.

I found your advice very useful though. So I'm gonna try and make it a little better for the next song.

Thanks again for your input.
