Business sense and being smart can be mutually exclusive. Buying everything cash and second isn't being 'intellignet', its being thrift.

So, you're telling me that they worked their asses off for the express purpose of raising as many kids as possible? That doesnt strike you as odd? Especially considering the STRONG evangelical lean? I'm looking at this whole thing the way DDDorian is. They're raising as many kids as they can, and indocrinating them hardcore. If they're not even educating the kids enough to get into college properly, then im not sure they're doing the best thing for them. raising 3-4 kids privately educated and capable of getting into respectable universities who can then, in turn do better for society is a much wiser choice than having 15-20 of them with aspirations such as "Being midwives" and whose hobbies include "Bathing".
