I was reading the above article, when I came across that paragraph. Maybe I'm naive, but are the Democrats really the party of the white uneducated? I always thought that the Democratic stronghold had been African Americans and young to middle aged urban educated whites, while the non-college-educated white demographic, especially outside of urban areas, was more the territory of the GOP. Am I just trying to idealize the party I've voted for in every election of my life by wanting them to be more educated than they are, or is this just doublespeak? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I remember when the Clinton's were portraying themselves as "New Democrats", breaking away from the FDR-style Democrats of old, in order to appear as centrists to a country that elected three terms worth of Republicans. Now, they're talking about being traditional Democrats who can bring out the party base, while Obama is the one appealing to the independents that Bill Clinton originally appealed to. Too funny. The stronghold of the Democrats these days are African Americans. That's roughly 30% of the country, and 95% of them vote Democrat. Those are numbers that are very hard to compete with, and the reason why Republicans almost never carry the urban areas. I think the modern GOP's days are numbered. The youth of this country are pissed off and voting Democrat in droves, which is not surprising when they are coming out of high school and college, unable to find work, and have only know Republican rule as long as they've been politically aware. As they grow in number, and the older conservative base die off, we will see power being to shift back the other direction. FDR, Truman, JFK, and Johnson represent a very large chunk of time with minimal interruption, and I think Nixon, Regan, Bush, Bush will come to be seen as another one of those chunks. Unless, of course, an incoming Democrat gets "Cartered". Carter had to deal with the mess Nixon left behind, and while not the best president, I do think he got unjustly blamed for a lot of what was going wrong. I'm happy that the mortgage crisis, ridiculous gas prices, rampant inflation, and crashing economy are happening on Bush's watch. I just hope people remember that in four years when we are, more than likely, not any better off. | |

![]() | It's just that Clinton is desperate and will say/do just about anything for the nomination. She continues to put her own ambition above what is good for the country. Her current behavior proves to my satisfaction that she would be just another shitty president in a long string of shitty presidents. Now that doesn't mean I would fail to choose her over McCain - who must be stopped - but I'd have to hold my nose while voting. ...there is no emoiticon to express what I'm feeling... |
