That's where her mailing address is, so she's claimed there. And she wouldn't file as an independent because that WOULD screw her mom over (currently a single mom working as hard as she can to raise 3 other kids under the age of 18).

Well, that explains it. I'm pretty sure you get extra money flat for having dependents, not per dependent.

Until next year, when she gets THIS years stimulus in addition to next year's.

I'm still classified as a dependent (college student) and I'm getting one.

I thought there was a cap on the refund, though.

Either way, she is over the age of 18, which is why she doesn't count as a child.

Is Income Tax a recent thing in the states? How does it work? Is it disgustingly retarded like all your other taxes where rich people somehow pay WAY LESS for being rich?
