The reason we're dealing with runaway inflation is because we are borrowing money to bankroll a war. This will not get any better until we get out of Iraq and start paying it off. There is absolutely nothing we can do to alleviate the situation, or we run the risk of driving more homeowners to foreclosure. Our answer? Bail out the the loans industry that got the housing market into this mess, and spend more money on the war.

Actually, IIRC, it's tapered off in the other direction - if you paid income taxes in 2007, it's a flat $600 individual/$1200 couple "pre-bate" on your 2008 taxes up to a certain income threshold, above which they take off X amount for each additional grand you make. So, the people who get less than $600 either 1.) didn't pay taxes in 2007 so it's inferred they most likely will not owe tax in 2008 and thus can't have a rebate to reduce their tax liability since this would push it past zero, or 2.) make a LOT of money.

Your sister is either making a lot of money, or only recieved $300-ish back because that's about all she paid in taxes in 2007. Am I right?

As to your second point, they DON'T have enough money to throw out. This thing is one of the dumbest things I've seen from the Bush administration. The deficit is spiraling out of control, causing the US economy and the dollar to tank, because taxes are at historic lows, so Bush lowers taxes even further.

Yeah, when I first heard about this "stimulus" all I could do was .
All people heard was, "you'll get a check" and pre-spent the money they thought they were going to receive.
I set my finances up so I either break even on April 15 or, now that I have a kid, get a small amount back, just to make sure that I don't owe anything. I hate the thought of giving the government an interest-free loan on my money, so I refuse to treat my taxes as a savings plan.
The "rebate" check? Yeah, I'm not seeing any of that.

I'm at the point where I believe the man is purposely trying to bankrupt the nation. He wants the middle class to disappear below the poverty line, returning us to the feudal-style days of a few people with all the money, and a whole lot of broke peasants toiling away with no hope for the future.

Really, it cannot be possible that he is really that fucking stupid. It is far easier to believe that he is just that fucking evil.
