Whoa, whoa, whoa! Don't go lumping atheists in with fundamentalists! Most have no desire to force their views upon the rest of the world, because we have no patron god who is telling us to spread our beliefs like the plague. The really vocal atheists have a really good reason to be militant: fundamentalists tend to wage a war against the type of scientific progress that benefits the entire human race.

Science is all about trying to prove your theories wrong. Religion is about assuming anything that conflicts with what you believe to be right is wrong. So, one is based upon rigorous research and experimentation, while the other is based upon plugging your fingers in your ears and insisting to the other kids that Santa is real.

Science and religion are both systems of belief.

With science, theories are believed to be true based on all available evidence, until such time as new evidence renders that theory obsolete, giving rise to a new or revised theory. Then the process begins again.

With religious beliefs, theories are believed to be true in spite of all available evidence, until such time as the evidence is questioned or ignored enough that it just goes away and the status quo can be preserved.

One system is based on evidence, the other is based on faith.

I don't begrudge people at all for having religious beliefs... whatever you need to do to figure out your place in the universe, so be it.
