I'm one of those crazies who thinks it should be 18, but 16 is a definite improvement over 14. Simple fact is that 14 year olds lack the ability to judge properly. In my isolated little town up here, there's an epidemic of cab drivers preying on young people, offering them rides in exchange for sexual favors, and because of the cab ownership issues, the companies that run the cabs are having a difficult time punishing them.

At 14 you really don't have a clue sorry to say, but it is true, you've only stopped playing with your Bratz dolls/transformers if you're lucky. That's not adulthood really, it's more the point where you become a lot more aware.

I mean, at the same time, if you can't do math, you shouldn't be allowed to multiply (or attempt it) which would end the sex lives of a great deal of the population and bring back some form of natural selection...

If I wanted to be protected from myself, I'd still be fucking Catholic. So much for people being responsible for themselves... why actually learn to think when you can have a nanny state? Quit making excuses ("Oh no 14yearoldsstillweardiaperssometimeswehavetohidethe mfromtheworld!") and start teaching people to take control of their own lives earlier rather than later and we'll be better off.

What's more... has nobody recalled how these laws are actually used? How many times are people 'protected' by these laws, and how many other times do vengeful parents just use them to get back at people and ruin their lives completely?

Why have laws at all? Everyone just needs to be more responsible.

My stepdaughter will be fourteen in three years. There are two ways I can deal with an adult sleeping with her: I can let the law prosecute him to the fullest extent, or I can hunt him down and cut his goddamn balls off. Both are me being a "responsible parent". Which do you think is the better solution for society as a whole?

Wait, Make hunting them down and chopping off their balls a law. THAT would be effective in scaring the shit out of pedophiles.

I'm sorry, but the reason 14 year olds lack the reasoning skills required to make informed decisions isn't because society chooses to coddle them. It's because they lack the physical requirements necessary to develop these skills. Their minds are limited by their physical age, and that's something that only the simple process of getting older can remedy. Until then, they need to be protected.
