But.... but.... but..... it's not torture. The US doesn't engage in torture. Except when we do. And then it's not torture, but "harsh interrogation." Which is really torture. Except when it's us doing it. *head explodes*

It's not "harsh interrogation". It's "enhanced interrogation techniques". That's much better.

As one analyst said, torture has never been a useful tool for finding the truth. People will confess to all sorts of stuff (that they may or may not have done) when under extreme physical and/or psychological duress.

Three agents, one each from the CIA, the KGB, and the Yamam, are arguing over who is the best spy. They agree that a good way to find out would be to release a rabbit into the wild and see who catches it first, with an impartial observer to make sure the rabbits released were the ones that were brought back.

The KGB agent catches the rabbit in two weeks. The CIA agent takes only one week. The Yamam operative, however, took only twenty minutes. While the two other agents were asking how only twenty minutes were needed, the judge comes into the room.

"I'm sorry, agent Portnoy, but we can't declare you the winner," the judge says. "It appears that the animal you caught was not, in fact, the rabbit you were assigned to track, but instead a tortoise."
"You must be mistaken, my good man - I have a written confession right here!"

Even though I knew it was coming, today's announcement and how he framed it still makes me ill.

OK the general climate is anti-torture here, and rightly so, I would say, but where exactly is the evidence either way?
