He's in a very bad place - half the world (maybe more than half) suspects that he was involved in this, somehow. It does seem very dickish, but not really out-of-line. She was a big girl, and she knew the risk she was taking.

Of course, this could also be the line of someone who *does* have something to hide, but I suspect we'll never know that for certain...
