Then they go to New Hampshire--which is the same, minus the evangelicals--and repeat the process. Then a bunch of states that don't matter, even though they are far more important as states, go through their own primaries. Somewhere along the way, a live chicken is sacrificed to the gods of politics, and the winning candidate has to give the chair of the Democratic National Committee a blowjob, while standing on his head and farting the Star Spangled Banner. |

I always forget how passionate a speaker Obama is. He basically stood up, opened his mouth, and sort of wiped the floor last night. I missed Huckabee's speach, which was probably a blessing. Edwards I agree is my favorite solely on policy, and I think we haven't seen the last of him, though I think he blew what momentum he could have had coming after an unexpectedly strong finish last night. I mean, no matter how you dice it, by placing second ahead of Clinton Edwards came out a victor last night... But his speech blew. That refrain of "why" he kept falling back on was just too whiny-rich-boy in tone and didn't have the indignant "why? I'll tell you why..." rage it would have needed to be effective. And then his speech itself was too disjointed, and his continuing attempts to stress how poor his grandparents were just rang hollow for a multi-million-dollar trial lawyer with a Republican haircut. I think Clinton's speech was a ballsy move - the reconciliatory notes at the beginning were not unexpected, but then she launched into another campaign speech, basically, on the value of experience and electability in the coming race. Listening to her, you got a sense that she thought losing in Iowa actually helped her campaign, instead of being a huge stumbling block. I was very surprised, and a bit impressed she was ballsy enough to go for broke like that. But Obama was on fire last night - he's obviously been brushing up on his Martin Luther King, and if he can deliver on that promise, than I think we're going to see him absolutely surge in New Hampshire. I've been predicting a come-from-behind Iowa win for months now, with the providing enough of a shock to the race to basically shake this myth of Clinton's nomination being a foregone conclusion. So far, so good. An Obama victory or even a dead heat in New Hampshire, and I think this is a whole new ballgame. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I'm still meh on the whole thing. I'm really finding myself with no one to go to on the Democratic side, though in a pinch I'll go for Obama. Edwards strikes me as all populist bluster and nothing to back it up with. Clinton is just crazy. Huckabee is the devil. McCain is a hypocrite. Giuliani's entire campaign is 9/11 fear mongering. Romney is almost as dumb as Huckabee. Paul has his fair share of the crazy too, and is nowhere near as socially liberal as he should be. I guess I'll end up supporting Obama, as I have the least amount of problems with his voting record (though I have quite a few, for example, his Y vote on the renewal of the PATRIOT act). We'll see how he does anything close to as ambitious as his healthcare reform though. ![]() |
