1) I'm sure his electricity use is offset by the use of solar panels. But regardless, it's a net gain because the geotherm pumps are a significant increase in the factor of EFFICIENCY. You're leaving out a big factor in the equation with such a shortsighted contention.

It's like the argument people made against electric cars, because the energy costs (and carbon emissions) aren't eliminated, they're just transferred, from vehicle to electric plant. Swell, and true. But electric cars are significantly MORE EFFICIENT than gas-powered vehicles.

Net result - less energy consumption, and less C02 emissions.

2) The argument that Al could move is a red herring, and frankly, utterly ridiculous, IMO. Sure, he could. But his house is a valuable historical building, and if he personally didn't live there, someone else would have, who likely wouldn't have made nearly as much of a green renovation, if at all. A valuable, historical house like that is also VERY unlikely to be torn down. So, while Al could personally go out, build the most energy efficient house ever, by doing so, he's basically just 'passing the cost' of a big, non-efficient home on to the next owner, and by proxy, the rest of us. But by renovating an old home, he's made a terrific single-use contribution on a pre-existing problem.

Besides, Al Gore can't fix global warming by himself. But it shows he's proactive, and working on the micro-level to help ameliorate the problems. Even if he lived on a pile of coal, that he burned every night to worship Gaia, that still in no way invalidates the impact of the global warming message, or it's impact to humanity, and neither does it invalidate his activism and the truth of what's he's saying.
