they are fucking serious and that's what's so hilarious.

Ron L. Hubbard, the founder of the religion, was a sci-fi writer and not a very good one. He was very unsuccessful in his writings and, if you look at what Scientologist's believe, you can see why. On that Wikipedia, it says that 75 million years ago, people on this other planet wore the same clothes as the present (1960s US) and they flew through space on a space ship that looked exactly like a major airplane in the 60's.

It really is ridiculous, but when he realized that he couldn't make money off of his stories as fiction, he tried to market them as a religion and it ended up working in getting him a lot of money.

I don't usually criticize religious people, because I can understand why people would believe a lot of religions, but you'd have to be a complete idiot to believe Scientology (yes, John Travolta and Tom Cruise are idiots). It's not JUST sci-fi. It's really really bad, very unrealistic sci-fi that seems like it was written by a junior high school student with a bizarre sense of humor.
