I admit that what the Senate is doing here is little more than political manouvering, Jim, but the net result is they're trying to put pressure on Bush to change course in Iraq. An overwhelming number of senators and an overwhelming number of Americans think that what Bush is trying to do is a bad idea - they're putting pressure on him to acknowledge this and confront the fact that what we have here isn't a US-vs-them-terrorists battle, but rather a civil war that we're trying (and failing) to police.

The Turkey thing made me think in one of two ways. As we all know, Republicans are not stupid. They're just greedy, selfish, self-serving assholes. So, there is two ways we can now look at Democrats.

On one hand, this could be an amazingly well executed, completely calculated move, designed at provoking Turkey to ignore our president's request to not wade across the border and attack the Kurds. It would be a fiendishly clever way of creating more instability and violence in an already turbulent country, causing even more of a demand to immediately withdraw. If Turkey comes in, look for Iran and Serbia to be one step behind. There is no way we would stick around for that.

Or, the Democrats are complete idiots who have no fucking clue what they are doing. This is what I'm leaning towards.
