Ken: Legalize all drugs. Put a small tax on them. PS: Repeal laws outlawing the use of drugs. Create new laws regulating them the same way alcohol is currently regulated: 21 years old to buy/possess/use, purchases can only be made at state run facilities, intoxication-based laws apply, quality standards regarding to the manufacture, packaging, and distribution are enacted, current federal, state, and local tax rates for alcohol are applied. The war on drugs is currently a budget item, where as legalization would have the two-fold benefit of eliminating a budget item at the same time new tax revenue is generated. Ken: All illegal drug traffic goes away, prices bottom out, and all the junkies OD. problem solved. PS: The bulk of organized crime in this country is supported by the illegal drug trade. Legalizing drugs would eliminate the reason for people to seek out the criminal distribution network, in the same way the end of the Prohibition dried up the bulk of the bootlegging industry, or the legalization of abortion eliminated the back alley abortion. There has been no appreciable improvement in drug related casualties since the criminalization of drugs, demonstrating without a doubt that certain people are predisposed to addiction, and will do whatever it takes to secure the substances they require. Jail overcrowding and a backed up criminal judicial system would see substantial relief if we were to stop trying and imprisoning people for victimless crimes. | |
