It's sad that you have to specify that people saying 'I don't like the war' means 'I don't approve of the government's actions' and not 'I want the people who will lay down their lives for something that they believe in just because I'm a traitorous little bitch who wants to see the terrorists win', but oh well. I think the issue is the type of people who decide to be politicians and the nature of the job. In order to get ahead in that field, you have to swallow a lot of your pride and integrity in order to gain favor. I know it's a grim assessment of politicians but it's the price they have to pay in order to find themselves in the position to make a difference (ironically it keeps them to timid to capitalize on that opportunity).

THis makes way more sense than you give it credit for. I do NOT support this war, i think it's a money grabbing excercise at installing a puppet goverment under the banner of democracy to gain favourqable access to a natural resource that has gone very wrong.

But I DO believe that anyone putting their beck on the line for my country, or any other, deserves respect. The people that put them there are muppets, and don't deserve it.

As usual, we get from the conservative side of the coin a splendid example of the inability to parse a statement in English. So let me lay it out for you:

The Iraq war was, in hindsight, totally unjustified. There is *no* logical argument otherwise from a U.S. perspective. So it's pretty easy to be "against the war", since it shouldn't have happened in the first place, and it's execution seems to define the word "blunder".

However, since that mistake has already been made, it makes sense to give the soldiers that are actually FIGHTING the tools they need to do their jobs until such time that the political will of the United States can be changed to support ending the conflict.

Therefore, it is completely possible to be against the idea of the conflict, but understand the reality of needing to make sure the forces that already involved in the conflict are properly equipped.

Now back to the topic at hand:

In reality, the AG doesn't seem to have done anything illegal other than possibly perjure himself - which doesn't seem to be terribly odd in this administration (or, indeed, many others). However, since politics and law are seldom the same thing, Bush would probably have been better off asking him to resign.

The Republican party is, at this point, really having some major PR problems.

You know, I seldom agree with you, but hit this one right on the mark. At this point, the Democrat side seems to be the lesser of two evils, but many with blind party allegiances are definitely played as fools by the people they actually elect from both sides.

Not much I can add that hasn't already been said, save that I would argue that supporting the troops, given the lack of predefined objectives from day one and the fact that every day the war drags on hardens anti-American sentiment in the region and draws recruits to islamic extremist groups hell-bent on trying to kill those troops, would actually require opposing the war.

Also, I suppose it should be noted that as you're lining up pretty closely with your GOP senators on this, the caveat I edited in evidently doesn't apply.

Partisan politics are exactly why we're so fucked here, in that supporting a failed nation-building excersize in an oil rich nation abroad or condemning a dishonest, incapable attorney general who was appointed not on credentials but for loyalty are now the sort of issues that, evidently, are answered by what color necktie you wear when you want to make a point, and not by their individual merits.
