Condoms With Teeth Fight Rape In South Africa

Over 30,000 Rape-Axe condoms are being handed out free at South Africa's World Cup. While they won't stop rape, the condoms (worn by women) have jagged-teeth inside to tear penises up, and can only be removed by doctors.
Sounds grim, but then I imagine rape isn't any fun for the woman either. The inventor, Dr Sonnet Ehlers, was inspired to create the painful condom after she met a woman who'd been raped. The woman apparently told Ehlers "if only I had teeth down there," which encouraged her to look at ways to make men regret their actions.
Women fearful of being raped can insert the Rape-Axe condom inside themselves like a diaphragm or tampon. If her worst fears come true, and a man attempts to rape her, the Rape-Axe's inside hooks attach themselves to the penis and don't come off, instead getting even tighter and stopping the man from being able to urinate. The only way to remove it is by seeing a doctor—which will obviously help with prosecution.

i applaud her efforts... but at the same time feel saddened that it has to come to this for a woman to protect herself.

It's not that it has finally come to this. It's that there is finally a chance to fight back.

Rape has been used for millenia to control women. There are numerous conflicts in recent history wherein one group rapes the women of the other group.

I think this will change things in unanticipated ways, both with legitimate and illegitimate uses....

I do think though that there is a possibility these could turn a rape incident into a murder. I certainly wouldn't be happy about finding one of those on my member.

you mean someone using one intentionally to cause another harm, like coaxing another person into having sex with them and find out they have thorns in their penis?

i think this will work because rapists usually go straight in don't they? no foreplay, just straight to intercourse(correct me if i am wrong). if it's purely consensual, i don't see this happening unless the two are really horny and the girl forgets it's even on(or in)... but i find that hard to imagine that a woman would forget that thing is in there. doesn't look like a very comfortable thing to have inserted and left there for the day.
i know tons of woman who hate using the stick in tampons because of it's irritability, so i am sure they wont forget it's there.

But really, I agree with what Explorer is saying about legitimate/illegitimate uses. Awesome invention, good idea. Get the rapists back where it hurts. But... not everyone uses things for what they were initially intended. There are some pretty manipulative and unbalanced people out there. I wouldn't even be surprised in the least to hear a story about a girl axe-raping her boyfriend's/husband's junk because she suspects him of cheating on her, or to get back at him for whatever else he may have done or whatever else she may simply suspect.

I do think this is a great idea, but it would make me scared to have sex with anyone at all. Are these ONLY seeing production/disbursement in Africa?

EDIT - Does that really sound creepy? Damn, it actually does. I'm not suggesting that they don't produce them here...I'm just expressing some of the same sentiment as expressed above: What if they're not used for their real intentions?

I'm thinking broader than that. If someone is ....ed up enough to rape someone, then what are they going to do to that woman if they got one of these things stuck on them? They could very well flip out and kill the girl.

man, i dont know about you, but i would panic and try to get the thing off and crawl in a ball then to think of hurting the girl some more. :P

plus, i seriously doubt the guy will chase a woman down the street with his pants down to his knees(i am thinking that pulling his pants back up will irritate the pain even more, let alone running after someone with that thing while your pants are rubbing against it, blood soaking everywhere and all.
