I remember reading a quote about how he was advocating pushing for a same-sex marriage ammendement even realizing it would most likely fail, and he couched it in terms of "the federal goverment's duty to strive for the most perfect form of government possible," out of respect for their constituents. Idunno, I'm slaugtering the quote, it was obviously a while ago, but you know, it was absolutely inspiring stuff. It was just, he had this incredible retorical vision of the role of the American government, one that even I as a diehard liberal would be up there screaming the Star Spangled Banner to, and yet he was using it to advocate something that I found absolutely disgusting; an attempt on the part of the federal government to regulate who could love whom, and by how much. The guy's incredble at what he does, it's just his politics are so incredibly misguided. A large part of me wants to blow off finance, move to DC, take "What Would Karl Rove Do" as my mantra, and start systematically ripping into the neo-con/religious right elements of the GOP (as well as some of the similarly fucked elements of the Dems) because, well, someone has to...
