If you're in the public eye and especially if you're a politician you'll be lambasted, it's the nature of the beast. Unfortunately that will include your family, especially if you use disabled offspring to garner sympathy votes.

"In my family we think laughing is good. My parents raised me to have a sense of humor and to live a normal life. My mother did not carry me around under her arm like a loaf of French bread the way former Governor Palin carries her son Trig around looking for sympathy and votes."

What I really loved was people stating Sarah could not have written that response, thus implicitly labeling her as a retarded woman, to the point of being unable to write a sincere opinion. Ah, the irony...

as the risk of being flamed, i feel that "family guy" was never very good.
while many of the jokes idea are generally very funny, they always draw them out for much longer than i feel the humor is truly sustainable. there's also a complete lack of subtlety in the humor. i don't need jokes handed to me in the most obvious way possible to find it funny. usually, the subtle approach is significantly more humorous (a la "the simpsons" in their heyday). and i find it troublesome that they tread bigoted humor very heavily while the main voice cast is white (so are most of their guest voice actors). that said, i'll still take "family guy" over sarah palin any day. without hesitation. |

So white people can't make racial remarks (which are not even written by themselves, but a writing staff who may be a mixed cauldron of sorts) just because they are white? I'd hate to sound like being part of the "don't hate on whitey" bandwagon, but comments like that are just silly. So if they got Black/Chinese/Indian/Etc. voice actors it would be OK? There's a lot more REAL bigotry and hatred out there. Having lived in the Southern part of the US, as well as New York (which has it's fair share of racial tension) I can tell you, that Family Guy has little true racial impact. It's the guy who talks about "hating them niggers", and how "kikes are going to hell" that's the problem. Not a cartoon show. P.S. I'm really sorry if I offended anyone with those derogatory terms. I wished only to use them in quotation as examples. I myself do not speak like that, nor am I bigoted. P.S.S. For the record, I'm not flaming/neg-ing you about your opinion of Family Guy being entertaining, or the rest of your post. We all have out own opinions about what's funny and entertaining.

Palin... Oh my... Something tells me she is doing this for attention, like the boy who cried wolf. The rest of the world is moving on from her (I sincerely hope) and she can't deal with it. Just my impression.

Good idea. And they could call it the Tea Party, and it's soul purpose will be to act like they're doing the 'will of the people' but they're actually just the most corrupt elements of their previous parties, seeking to go forth and leech money from the pockets of people with absolutely no intention of changing anything.

what is more acceptable...morgan freeman playing a typical denigrated servant in "driving miss daisy" or ted danson in blackface playing that same role? one version has social, historical, and personal significance. the other is hard to not interpret as mockery and insult. Quote:
when hitler converted most of germany to hate jews, he commissioned cartoons and films to help sway the public. those were also "just cartoons" but they carried negative images that people did internalize. the other week, i heard someone on my floor laugh and exclaim "ha! typical jew!" when the orange-haired guy on the show said/did something stereotypical. he was probably prejudiced before watching the show, but the show certainly reinforced his feelings. i know "family guy" does it with intentions of jest, but they push on the boundary so hard that it often perpetuates the problem instead of representing it satirically. feel free to disagree, but i have no intention of arguing it, nor do i want to get into a flame war over it. i've been an adult since before the show aired, i've seen things change as a result of shows like "family guy" and "south park" and it's not good change (like the fact that "rape" has become a joke word that is carelessly tossed around). it's a psychological thing called "normalization" (where people become convinced that something outrageous/offensive/abnormal is acceptable after having been consistently exposed to it for a long enough time). at least "south park" makes it obvious that they're mocking the topic at hand, while "family guy" is more ambiguous and open to interpretation. once again, though: forced to pick between palin and "family guy", i pity the fool who thinks palin is the better choice. |

I don't think the Down Syndrome thing was below the belt, because it was done to make people with Down Syndrome as normal people, and the Palin thing was pretty much a jab just to get some press. I wish I could say that all their satire has a 'take-away' like that, but they don't. "Can we pull back the veil of static and reach in to the source of all being? The issue that many are avoiding is that the majority of the writing staff is Jewish. There are also Gays, Lesbians, Blacks, and Asians. Which is the lion's share of those who are lampooned on Family Guy.
Perhaps everyone is just taking a cartoon show a little too seriously. If people are so effected by a cartoon, then maybe it's the people and not the cartoon which are defective. The issue is people who "take a cartoon too seriously" and use what's portrayed on the show as a means of hating on others. There was a thread on here a few months ago about a Jewish kid on here that had some hateful things said to him in school. There's no guarantee exactly where they learned that behavior from, but it definitely didn't crop up out of nowhere. And yeah, people who are ignorant or bigoted are already that way, and a stupid cartoon isn't going to change them, but giving them material to fuel their bigotry is irresponsible. Some people are able to watch a cartoon, distinguish what is satire, laugh and move on. Other people allow what they see to, as you said, be taken too seriously and they use what they see as a barometer for how they're supposed to perceive others. I'm sure both our parents raised us well, but a lot of kids are and have been raised by either television or shitty parents. Or both. It's like somebody with a gun out to kill someone else. Sure, the bigger problem that needs to be addressed is the fact they're out to kill someone in the first place, but until that's fixed... maybe we need to be more responsible than giving them a handful of bullets. ![]() EDIT: If you haven't seen it, watch the movie Bamboozled. "Can we pull back the veil of static and reach in to the source of all being? Behind this curtain of patterns, this random pattern generator. So clever. ^ well said.
+1 to bamboozled, too. the main reason i don't like family guy is because i don't like their style of humor, not because it offends me or i take it seriously. but i know people who do have their world view affected by it, and that *does* bother me. it says more about them than the TV show, but as randy pointed out: giving bullets to idiots with guns doesn't help matters. |
