Tuning a half step down?

Hey,

I'm getting a pro setup for my universe, and am planning on using 9-46+60 gauge strings on it if i go with standard tuning, but I'm wondering if I should try a half step down? I dont want to seem like I'm just doing what my favorite bands do, but it seems Bb is popular among 7 stringers. The reason I want to tune to standard is I want to have one guitar in standard tuning, but I have a feeling Bb might sound a bit better, but the tonality change might be negligible. Any advice?

Thanks
Ryan

PS: this is primarily going to be for metal in the style of Nevermore/ Dream Theater, and also, would Bb make it harder to incorporate keys?

I keep my Carvin DC727 in Standart E tuning and use 9-42+56. that guitar likes that set up.
on my J-custom (and the 7620's I used to own) I tuned them all down 1/2 a step (my nevermore guitars) and I always seem to like 10-46+60 on the Ibbys.

B flat won't really sound any 'better" just a little lower.

Man you ladies play with spider webs.

I would not even think about going lower than standard with 9's..but hell..I won't use anything lighter than 11's for any tuning...so If it feels ok to you then do it.

I don't really understand your thoughts on making anything more difficult.

I actually like to play Lead
11's in standard tuning for me would just suck.
10's in standard are ok on certain guitars.

Haha, i used to use 12s in standard on my Sg, now i have 11-54 in C or D, but 10s in standard are too thick on the unwound strings on the UV, i tuned to G and the unwound strings were surprisingly awesome.

I dunno, I love nevermore and wouldnt mind tuning down to learn their songs, but this is for what tuning i wanna write my stuff with.

So much stuff in standard... and so much in Bb... hard choice

and for Bb i would probably use 10-50 or 9.5-50 with a 64

I use a regular 10-59 d'addario set for A# standard (so, half step down, I guess).

Sounds tight as hell to me

Edit: Definitely revived a dead thread. Shame on me.

Thicker strings have better tone. I use 11 gague strings in standard tuning to get a fat tone on the high strings. If you use thick strings, you will get used to them and they become easy to play with.

Thicker strings have DIFFERENT tone. Not better, not worse, just different. They tend to be a little more naturally compressed, which gives them the impression of sounding a little darker (due to the less pronounced attack) and have somewhat more sustain (for the same reasons).

I actually kind of like the sound of thinner strings, as I tend to like fairly dark amp sounds coupled with bright guitars. However, I like the feel of heavier strings, I pick pretty hard which causes problems on lighter strings, and I feel like I phrase a little better on them. I use 10s as a compromise.

Really, though, as a guy with one foot pretty firmly planted in the thick strings camp, this whole "thicker strings = more tone" thing is pretty dumb. It's a question of evaluating each piece of your signal chain in light of every other piece, and figuring out what works for you.

I'm a light top, heavy bottom guy. And it's not like I'm purposely using a deathgrip, hand me a guitar with light bottoms and I guarantee you all of my low notes will warble like hell with no sustain. I've tried using lighter strings, it just doesn't work for me.

When I made my comment I was referring to guys running an .80 for a low B. 11's in E are hardly huge.

Either ernie ball or ghs makes a 90, yes it's a guitar string.

EDIT: I went and checked, it's GHS
